Summary of reports and key actions taken by the
Board of Trustees on March 26, 2013
ACTION TAKEN AND REPORTS RECEIVED BY THE BOARD:
Report from Board of Trustees – Board members and student representatives from Dublin and Valley High Schools reported on participation and attendance at events including: junior prom, DHS boys basketball in NorCal finals; field-trip to Asian Art Museum (VHS), St. Patrick’s Day parade; winter percussion concert at DHS; Wellness Committee Meeting; SELP Meeting; Tri-Valley Education Collaborative; Carpenters Training facility tour; final beam ceremony for DHS Center for Performing Arts and Education.
Employee Association Report – Stephanie Anderson - DTA Co-President - Addressed the board about idioms. Noted that in April in 2011 which referenced the number of hours that teachers worked without pay. Noted that this includes teachers nights and weekends. Noted that the hours to date have increased tremendously. Noted that they deserve to be paid for their work.
Report from the Superintendent – Dr. Hanke recognizes band musicians Alan West - DHS - No. Calif. Band Assoc. First Tenor; All State Honor Band, Third Chair overall; Lily Hu - FMS - No. Calif. Honor Band; Ishan Saha - FMS - No. Calif. Honor Band; Chris Yuan - FMS - No. Calif. Honor Band; and recognizes DHS Varsity and JV Spirit Squads for winning national championships at JAMZ event; Dr. Hanke introduces spotlight on Murray Elementary School.
Field Trips – DHS Drama Club to Ashland for Oregon Shakespeare Festival in June; DHS Boys Lacrosse on spring break trip to visit three Universities and compete against a Southern California, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) opponent, in Boys Lacrosse in San Diego, CA from April 1-4, 2013; DHS Track and Field to West Coast Relays at Buchanan High in Clovis, April 12-13.
Citizen Bond Oversight Committee appointments – Board approves re-appointment of CBOC members: John Stallwitz, Brad Neff and Bryan Finn.
TBWB Management Consulting Agreement – Board approves TBWB Management Consulting Agreement for ongoing Public Information for Measure L and Measure E Transparency.
Update Board Policy 3300 - Board approves proposed revisions to Board Policy 3300, to update the expenditures limits to conform to current law.
School Site in Jordan Ranch - Board approves agreement for increase in acreage for school site in Jordan Ranch.
Special Education Services, College and Career Readiness – Board receives information and discusses implementation of work in the Special Education Department around College and Career readiness.
AVID Program Update – Board receives update on AVID program at Dublin High School. AVID counselor Caroline Rubio discusses criteria for eligibility for AVID; DHS AVID pitcher Streisand Hall talked about scheduling offerings and provided statistics on the number of AVID students accepted to four-year colleges; Four students offered their perspectives on the program.
District Demographic Projections – Board received information on district’s most current demographic projections. Representative of SCI Consulting presents the information. District continues to grow at rate of 6-7 percent. Schools are impacted by growth. DUSD working with city staff three times a year on growth patterns.
Vision 20/20, Resource Alignment, Human Resources – Board received information from Ms. Williams on results on new survey given to new teachers following Boot Camp attended in August 2012 and how it assisted them. Ms. Williams also outlined recruitment efforts in the HR department.
Vision 20/20, Resource Alignment, Financial – Board receives information from Ms. Heironimus on district financial state. Ms. Heironimus states that district must make public aware of financial constraints including increase in health-care costs and expiration of parcel tax. Continued need to look at ways to bring revenue into district, including renewing parcel tax, partnering with local corporations and other local resources. Ms. Heironimus credit Janet Lockhart with helping to identify potential funding sources.
Vision 20/20, Wellness – Board receives information on the work on Wellness Advisory Council. Members of the committee from each grade level outlined activities occurring at schools for the Integrity in Action Program. First “Stars of Integrity” night will be held on May 16 to honor students who have excelled in exhibiting character traits. Information also shared on physical health at elementary and secondary levels. Information on statistics on the use of drugs and alcohol also shared along with education programs. Ms. Rodgers, assistant principal at Dublin High, talked of bullying and cyber bullying. A anonymous tip line has been activated on the high school website.
OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST:
Closed Session – Board held conference on matter of employee discipline, dismissal and release as well as anticipated litigation.
Visitors – Mr. Jeff Taylor spoke on the need to increase teacher salaries; Mr. Price on behalf of first-grade teacher taking issue with cancellation of ELA training; Ms. Anderson on behalf of Wells parent that academic prep period is a waste of time; Ms. Kreitz on behalf of teacher Sandy Wechsler regarding teacher salaries; Michele Chandler, speaking in support in increase in teacher salaries; Mr. Simon Harrison, speaking on temporary classrooms and large class sizes as well as traffic issues; Ms. Sobia Qureshi on portable classrooms and location of the portables; Mr. Joe Giannini inquiring about portable classrooms; Student Matthew Aini on lack of space on campuses; Ms. Margaret Lee on portable classrooms; Ms. Huang on overcrowding at Green; Ms. Margaris on traffic issues due to overcrowding; Mr. Adrian on planning for growth; Regina Pangelinan regarding student and traffic safety.
Spotlight on Murray Elementary- Principal Carrie Nerheim, students and teachers offered information on key programs and offerings at Murray Elementary School and a Powerpoint presentation highlighted those many offerings.
